2024-2025 SEASON Auditions

Here is the audition schedule for the 2024-2025 school year:

Auditions for 7/8 Honor Choir

  • Incoming 8th graders for the 2023-2024 school year auditioned on February 28th. Please see below for audition results.

  • Incoming 7th graders for the 2023-2024 school year auditioned on Tuesday, April 18, in the choir room (Room 801). Students or parents emailed Dr. Brookey at jbrookey AT lcusd.net to be assigned a 10-minute timeslot on the audition day (personal emails only, not LCUSD).

  • Please note: There are very few openings available for this choir. If not selected, Dr. Brookey encourages you to join one of the other wonderful choir offerings for 7/8 students:

    • Men’s Ensemble: A non-auditioned choir for 7th-12th grade male students. The class meets during 0 period.

    • Women’s Ensemble: A non-audition choir for 7th-12th grade female students. The class meets during the regular school day.

Auditions for Vocal Ensemble, Concert Choir, and Chamber Singers

  • Auditions for 8th-11th graders who are currently in choir were held on March 8-9.

  • Auditions for NEW STUDENTS was on March 20th. New students emailed Dr. Brookey at jbrookey AT lcusd.net to be given an assigned 10-minute audition time.

There is a place for every student in the LCHS Choral program.

The Men’s Ensemble (7th-12th grade) and the Women’s Ensemble (7th-12th grade) are non-audition choirs. For those with more musical background, consider auditioning for the 7/8 Honor Choir (7th-8th grade), Vocal Ensemble (9th-12th grade), Concert Choir (9th-12th grade), or Chamber Singers (10th-12th grade).

Men’s Ensemble

Women’s Ensemble

Auditions are not required for Men’s Ensemble or Women’s Ensemble.

No prior musicianship training is required, only a desire to sing and an ability to sing a melody.

Men’s Ensemble meets during zero period. Women’s Ensemble meets during the regular school day.


7/8 Honor Choir

Who can audition: Incoming 7th and 8th graders

Musicianship skills: Basic musicianship skills (download flyer at right for more information)

Audition piece: Students need to be prepared to sing a 30-60 second a cappella song segment of their choice.  The song should be classical in nature, such as an art song (no pop songs). Folk songs, patriotic music, hymns, carols, and classic musical theatre songs (before 1970) will also be acceptable.

The audition will consist of the following:

  • song presentation

  • vocalizing to classify range

  • a series of ear training exercises

  • a short basic musicianship evaluation.

Musicianship:

Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of musicianship including areas such as:
Keyboard note recognition • Names of treble and bass clef notes • Basic rhythmic patterns • Recognition of major key signatures

Audition dates:

  • Incoming 8th graders: February 28th

  • Incoming 7th graders: April 18th

Audition time:

Email Dr. Brookey at jbrookey AT lcusd.net to set up an audition appointment. Use a personal email address rather than a LCUSD email address.

Callbacks: TBD (Typically there is no callback).

Vocal Ensemble

Concert Choir

Who can audition:

Vocal Ensemble - students currently in 8th-11th grade
Chamber Singers - students currently in 9th-11th grade
Concert Choir - students currently in 8th-11th grade

Musicianship skills: Intermediate to advanced skills (download flyer at right for more information)

Audition song:

  • This Italian aria must be sung a cappella in any key you wish.

  • The song should be memorized and sung in a classical nature (no chest or belt tone).

  • The audition will consist of the following:

    • song presentation

    • vocalizing to classify range

    • a series of ear training exercises

    • sight-singing  (exempt for Vocal Ensemble)

    • a short basic musicianship evaluation.

Musicianship:

Students are expected to have an intermediate to advanced knowledge of musicianship including areas such as:
Keyboard note recognition • Names of treble and bass clef notes • Basic rhythmic patterns • Recognition of major key signatures • Sight-sing melodic patterns in a major key with various interval skips (exempt for Vocal Ensemble) • Demonstration of  strong aural skills • Demonstration of basic music analytical skills

Audition dates:

Vocal Ensemble, Concert Choir, & Chamber Singers auditions
March 8th-9th, 2023 (current students)
March 20, 2023 (new students)

They will be in 10-minute increments beginning at 4pm.
